Mumming and Contemporary Artists---Jym Davis

Atlanta artist Jym Davis makes large, colorful masks of paper mache in primarily animal and animal-like forms. Many of his masks have a Southwest Native American and/or African feel to them with their bold black and white geometric lines and stylized designs of bats, foxes and bulls. Some of his masks, however, make me think of European mumming costumes in that they employ bells as a primary decoration. I could easily see these particular masks at work in a Perchtenlauf. You can see more of his masks and his interesting projects at https://www.jymdavis.com/ or his mask related Instagram at @_false_face.
