Costume Tips

This will be an ever evolving page as we add more stuff we find.

Mid Winter Monsters is not stuck on the concept of exacting reproductions of trad masks---while we prefer that costumes stay within the "shaggy winter demon", "nature monster", or Schnabelperchten style, there is wiggle room.

Genuine hand-carved Krampus/Perchta masks are very expensive (many hundreds of dollars) and can be hard to find, requiring expensive shipping from overseas. There are some makers of similar masks in the US now. I found one on Etsy who seems to make them in the style of Bulgarian Kukeri, using molded leather:

Again, very expensive and requiring at least 6-8 weeks to create. There are some other options:

A less expensive, customizable option  Red Nebula Cosplay This seller also offers just the horns for around 30.00

One could also go the Halloween costume route, and customize from there. Add some fur around the horns of this mask, or some kind of wig or fibers for hair, and maybe a long red tongue and you are just about there   HalloweenCostumes.com

The genre of creepy burlap masks also offers possibilities. There are tons of tutorials on this subject on the internet---or you could buy this reasonably priced one (40.00) from crookedcrowmasks

Crooked Crow Masks is also offering this Krampus style mask made of paper mache

Heck, you could even just get yourself a mask base, like this one for 9,99, and go wild adding paint, fur and horns. Or, you could go the nature monster route and cover it in pinecone pieces and fir branches.
