Costume Examples

Costumes for Perchtenlaufs are varied, especially by region, though most are of the "shaggy winter demon" variety. Below are some common examples.

This guy is considered a "good" monster, albeit one who has to be "captured" and brought into the house.

Schnabelperchten  I could not find an attribute for this photo. These creatures are a stylized representation of Perchta and are related to her supposed long nose and also her association with birds. "Schnabel" means "beak". The oversized scissors they carry are a nod to one of her epithets: "The Belly Slitter". When angered because chores aren't done, houses aren't clean, the right kind of food was not left as an offering, etc, "The Belly Slitter" would cut a person open, remove their entrails, stuff the person with straw and dirt, and sew them back up. Wheee!

Pinecone and moss man.  This costume was worn by a member of our own 2014 lauf. One can see many variations of the rather inchoate nature monster in European mumming, from the burry man of Scotland to tree men in Germany.

Another form of "Percht" is the wearing of these elaborate headdresses
